The Warhawks of VFA-97 were established on June 1, 1967 flying the A-7 Corsair II. The flew the Corsair II until 1991 at which time they transitioned to the F/A-18 Hornet. In 2013 they transitioned to the F/A-18E Super Hornet which they flew until 2021 at which time the transitioned to their current aircraft, the F-35C Lightning II. They supported efforts in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria.
