The Sidewinders of VFA-86 were brought to active duty on February 1, 1951 flying the F4U Corsair. They have flown various aircraft to include the A-4 Skyhawk, A-7 Corsair II, F/A-18 Hornet, F/A-18E Super Hornet and today the F-35C Lightning II. They have supported actions in Vietnam, Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Inherent Resolve.
