The Sunliners of VFA-81 began on July 1, 1955 as VA-66 but were redesignated on the same day to VF-81. Their first aircraft was the F9F Cougar, followed by the A-4 Skyhawk, the A-7 Corsair II, the F/A-18 Hornet and currently the F/A-18E Super Hornet. They have supported Desert Shield, Operations Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Inherent Resolve.
