The Tomcatters of VFA-31 were commissioned on July 1, 1935 as VF-1B flying the Boeing F4B. They are the second oldest active US Navy squadron. They have flown multiple aircraft over the years to include the F6F Hellcat, F9F Panther, F2H Banshee, F-4 Phantom, F-14 Tomcat and currently the F/A-18E Super Hornet. They have support US efforts in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, as well as recent Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and Inherent Resolve.
