The Fighting Checkmates of VFA-211 were established on May 1, 1945 flying the SBW-4E Helldiver. Throughout the squadrons history they have flown multiple aircraft to include the F4U Corsair, FJ-3 Fury, F-11 Tiger, F-8 Crusader, F-14 Tomcat, the F/A-18F Super Hornet and currently the F/A-18E Super Hornet. They have supported combat actions in the Korean War, Vietnam War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Inherent Resolve.
