Fighter Squadron 96 (VF-96), known as the “Fighting Falcons,” was established on 20 July 1950 and began operations flying the F4U Corsair. They would go on to fly the F94 Cougar, F-8 Crusader and the F-4 Phantom II. VF-96 deployed in support of the Korean War and multiple times during the Vietnam War aboard USS Constellation, where they flew combat air patrol, escort, and strike missions over North Vietnam. On 10 May 1972, during intense air combat operations, Lieutenant Randy “Duke” Cunningham and Lieutenant (j.g.) Willie Driscoll of VF-96 became the Navy’s only aces of the Vietnam War, scoring five aerial victories in a single deployment. The squadron was disestablished on 1 December 1975, closing out two decades of distinguished service.
