Fighter Squadron 33 (VF-33) was established on 11 October 1948 flying the F4U Corsair. After the Corsair they would make the jump to jets and between 1954 to 1961 would fly four different jet aircraft - F9F Panther, FJ-3 Fury, F11 Tiger, and the F-8 Crusader. In 1964 they would begin flying the F-4 Phantom II and in 1981 would transition one last time to the F-14 Tomcat. VF-33 was known as the Tarsiers from 1948 to 1958 and changed to the Astronauts from 1958 to 1961. In 1961 they changed back to the Tarsiers until they began flying the F-14 Tomcat at which time they adopted the name Starfighters. Over the course of their history they conducted combat operations in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and Operation Desert Storm. On 1 October 1993 the Navy disestablished the squadron.
