The Wolfpack of Fighter Squadron 1 (VF-1) was established on 14 October 1972 at Naval Air Station Miramar. VF-1, along with VF-2, were the first operational F-14 Tomcat squadrons in the Navy. They conducted the Tomcat's first combat action when the they flew cover over Saigon in 1975 while it was being evacuated. VF-1 also conducted actions in support of Operation Dessert Storm in 1991 and achieved the only F-14 air to air kill of the war when they shot down an Mi-8 Hip helicopter. On 1 October 1993 the Navy disestablished the squadron. In the movie TOPGUN, Maverick and Goose were a part of a fictional VF-1. Shots in the movie taken at Miramar have Wolfpack F-14s in the background.
