Reconnaissance Attack (Heavy) Squadron 1 or RVAH-1, known as the Smokin' Tigers was established on 1 November 1955 at Naval Air Station Jacksonville. Initially called VAH-1 flying the the A3D Skywarrior followed by the A-5 Vigilante. In 1964 they would upgrade to the RA-5C Vigilante and be redesignated as RVAH-1. Between 1965 and 1972 they would make four deployments in support of operations in Vietnam. In early 1979, at NAS Key West the squadron with be disestablished after 24 years of service.
