Honor the legacy of RVAH-1, the Smokin' Tigers, and their pioneering role in U.S. Naval Aviation.
Established as Heavy Attack Squadron ONE (VAH-1) on November 1, 1955, the Smokin' Tigers became the Navy's first Heavy Attack Squadron and the first fleet squadron to operate the A3D Skywarrior. The squadron later transitioned to the supersonic Vigilante and was redesignated Reconnaissance Attack Squadron ONE (RVAH-1) on September 1, 1964.
Flying the RA-5C Vigilante, RVAH-1 carried out demanding tactical reconnaissance missions during the Vietnam War, using the aircraft's speed and sophisticated sensor systems to gather critical intelligence from heavily defended territory. The Smokin' Tigers continued serving the fleet through the Cold War until the squadron was disestablished on January 29, 1979.
