About the VFA-83 Rampagers

The Rampagers trace their lineage to 1951, when Naval Reserve Fighter Squadron 916 (VF-916) was called to active duty. The squadron was redesignated VF-83 in 1953 and VA-83 in 1955. During its early years, it flew aircraft including the F4U Corsair, F8F Bearcat, F9F Panther, F7U Cutlass, and A-4 Skyhawk. The squadron adopted its distinctive ram's-head insignia and Rampagers nickname in 1957.

The Rampagers later transitioned to the A-7E Corsair II and operated the aircraft for nearly two decades. In 1987, the squadron completed its final A-7 deployment before transitioning to the F/A-18C Hornet. VA-83 was redesignated VFA-83 in 1988. The squadron subsequently flew combat missions during operations including Desert Storm, Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and Inherent Resolve.

VFA-83 began transitioning from the F/A-18C Hornet to the F/A-18E Super Hornet in 2018. Today, the Rampagers continue to fly the single-seat F/A-18E, carrying forward more than seven decades of Naval Aviation history and combat service.
