About the VFA-115 Eagles

The Eagles trace their lineage to October 10, 1942, when the squadron was established as Torpedo Squadron 11 (VT-11). Flying the TBF Avenger during World War II, VT-11 conducted combat operations throughout the Pacific, including strikes against Bougainville, the Solomon Islands, Okinawa, and remnants of the Japanese fleet following the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The squadron was redesignated VA-12A in 1946 and became VA-115 in 1948.

VA-115 went on to build an extensive combat record in Korea and Vietnam, flying the AD Skyraider and later the A-6 Intruder. During the Korean War, the squadron flew more than 2,200 combat missions, including strikes supporting the amphibious assault at Inchon. In Vietnam, the squadron flew both the Skyraider and Intruder and participated in Operation Linebacker I. The squadron adopted the Eagles nickname in 1978.

In 1996, VA-115 transitioned to the F/A-18C Hornet and was redesignated VFA-115. The Eagles became the first squadron to transition to the F/A-18E Super Hornet and flew the aircraft's inaugural combat deployment, participating in Operations Enduring Freedom, Southern Watch, and Iraqi Freedom. In February 2026, VFA-115 completed its transition to the F-35C Lightning II, opening a new chapter in a combat legacy spanning more than eight decades.
