About the VFA-11 Red Rippers
The Red Rippers trace their lineage to 1927, making them one of the oldest and most storied names in U.S. Naval Aviation. For nearly a century, the squadron has carried forward a proud tradition of carrier aviation, distinguished by its unmistakable Red Ripper name and insignia.
Over the decades, the Red Rippers have flown some of Naval Aviation's most recognizable fighters, including the F2H Banshee, F-8 Crusader, F-4 Phantom II, and F-14 Tomcat. During the Tomcat era, VF-11 flew combat operations in support of missions including Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom. The squadron remained with the F-14 through 2005.
In 2005, VF-11 transitioned to the two-seat F/A-18F Super Hornet and was redesignated VFA-11. Today, the Red Rippers continue to fly the F/A-18F from NAS Oceana, Virginia, carrying forward one of Naval Aviation's most recognizable squadron identities and a tradition that has endured for generations.
