Over their long history, the squadron flew generations of Navy fighters including the F8F Bearcat, F4U Corsair, F-3 Demon, F-4 Phantom II, and F-14 Tomcat. During Vietnam, VF-142 Phantom crews distinguished themselves in air-to-air combat, downing enemy MiGs while flying from U.S. Navy carriers. \u003cspan class=\"contents\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter transitioning to the F-14 Tomcat, VF-142 continued its carrier-based fighter mission through the final decades of the Cold War. The Ghostriders later became one of the first squadrons to deploy with the improved F-14A+, subsequently designated the F-14B. Their final deployment in 1994 aboard USS \u003cem\u003eGeorge Washington\u003c\/em\u003e included support for Operation Deny Flight over Bosnia and Operation Southern Watch over Iraq before the
