About the VFA-136 Knighthawks
The Knighthawks were established as Strike Fighter Squadron 136 (VFA-136) on July 1, 1985. Unlike many older Navy squadrons that passed through several designations, VFA-136 has carried the same designation throughout its history. The squadron began operations with the F/A-18 Hornet and built its reputation through decades of carrier deployments and strike-fighter operations.
The Knighthawks flew the F/A-18C Hornet in combat during operations in the Middle East and Southwest Asia. During a 2006 deployment, VFA-136 conducted extensive combat operations over both Iraq and Afghanistan, supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Its missions included close air support, surveillance, reconnaissance, and support for coalition forces operating on the ground.
After decades operating the legacy Hornet, VFA-136 transitioned to the F/A-18E Super Hornet in 2008. The Knighthawks continue to fly the single-seat F/A-18E, carrying forward a strike-fighter legacy that began with the squadron's establishment in 1985.
