About the VAQ-140 Patriots

The Patriots of VAQ-140 were established in October 1985 as an EA-6B Prowler squadron. Early in their history, the Patriots helped evaluate the AGM-88 High-speed Anti-Radiation Missile (HARM) and became the first Prowler squadron to operationally deploy with the weapon in 1986. The squadron went on to build an extensive record of carrier-based and expeditionary electronic attack operations.

Over the following decades, VAQ-140 supported operations including Desert Shield, Southern Watch, Allied Force, Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and Unified Protector. During Operation Allied Force in 1999, the Patriots flew more than 740 combat missions while supporting NATO operations over the Balkans. The squadron continued flying the EA-6B through its final Prowler deployments in support of Enduring Freedom.

VAQ-140 completed its transition to the EA-18G Growler in July 2014 and made its first Growler deployment in November 2015. During that deployment, the Patriots flew combat missions in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. Today, VAQ-140 continues to operate the EA-18G Growler from NAS Whidbey Island, Washington, carrying forward more than four decades of electronic attack history and the distinctive Patriots identity.
