About the VAQ-133 Wizards
The Wizards of VAQ-133 were originally established on March 4, 1969, at NAS Alameda, California, flying the EKA-3B Skywarrior. The squadron made combat deployments to Southeast Asia before relocating to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington, in 1971 and transitioning to the EA-6B Prowler. In 1974, the Wizards made the first Prowler deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and continued to build a long record of carrier-based electronic warfare operations.
VAQ-133 was disestablished in June 1992 but returned to service on April 1, 1996, as an expeditionary squadron. Over the following years, the Wizards deployed around the world and flew combat missions in support of operations including Northern Watch, Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom, and New Dawn. In December 2011, VAQ-133 flew the final EA-6B Prowler combat missions over Iraq.
The Wizards completed their transition to the EA-18G Growler in 2014 and returned to carrier operations. Today, VAQ-133 continues to fly the Growler from NAS Whidbey Island. In 2024, the squadron added another milestone to its history by becoming the first Navy squadron to deploy with the ALQ-249 Next Generation Jammer, continuing the Wizards' long tradition at the forefront of airborne electronic attack.
