About the VAQ-129 Vikings

The Vikings trace their history to Heavy Attack Squadron 10 (VAH-10), established in 1961 and redesignated Electronic Attack Squadron 129 (VAQ-129) on September 1, 1970. The squadron became the Navy's Fleet Replacement Squadron for the EA-6B Prowler, beginning a decades-long role training aircrew and maintainers for the electronic attack community.

For more than three decades, the Vikings trained generations of Navy and Marine Corps personnel to operate and maintain the EA-6B Prowler. As the Navy prepared to replace the Prowler, VAQ-129 was selected to introduce its successor, the EA-18G Growler, to the fleet. In June 2008, the squadron received the Navy's first production EA-18G Growler and began training crews for the new aircraft.

Today, VAQ-129 continues to serve as the Fleet Replacement Squadron for the EA-18G Growler at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. The Vikings remain at the center of the Navy's electronic attack community, preparing aircrew and maintainers for operational Growler squadrons while carrying forward a training mission that has spanned generations of Naval Aviation.
