  • The Korean War - Hwachon Dam:

1 May 1951: After attempts by the Air Force B-29 Flying Fortress and an attempt by the Navy with 2000 lb bombs on 30 April failed to destroy the Hwachon Dam in North Korea, the decision was made to use Mk-13 anti-ship torpedoes from World War II. The USS Princeton only brought 12 Mk-13s onboard and initially didn’t even know where they were located. Additionally, only three aircrew had flown with them and no ordnancemen had any experience loading them. After a long night of studying manuals, the torpedoes were loaded on five AD-4 Skyraiders of VA-195. Dodging anti-aircraft fire and 4000 ft peaks the Skyraiders descended to 100 feet above the reservoir and dropped their torpedoes. Six of the eight torpedoes used struck the dam with dramatic effects leaving it inoperable for the rest of the war and flooding the valley below. To this day VA-195 (now VFA-195) is known as the Dambusters. FLY NAVY!
